Linda Ronstadt remains one of the most celebrated vocalists in American music history. She earned 11 Grammy Awards, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, and received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2019. Her catalog spans rock, country, pop, soul, and Motown β which is exactly what makes a Linda Ronstadt tribute band so compelling at a live event. There is simply a lot of great material to draw from, and audiences across all age groups tend to know it.
Any serious Linda Ronstadt tribute band will build their setlist around her biggest chart hits. “You’re No Good” is typically the centerpiece. Originally written by Clint Ballard Jr., Ronstadt’s 1974 recording reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the signature of her entire career. Its driving rhythm and raw vocal energy make it a natural crowd moment at any live show.
“Blue Bayou” is another essential. Ronstadt transformed Roy Orbison’s quiet original into a platinum-selling hit that reached number three on the pop charts. It is one of the most emotionally resonant songs in her catalog, and a well-performed live version tends to stop a room.
“When Will I Be Loved” β her version of the Everly Brothers classic β reached number two on the pop charts and the top of the country chart. It is short, punchy, and immediately recognizable. “It’s So Easy,” a Buddy Holly song that appeared on her 1977 album Simple Dreams, is another live staple. That album spent five consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard charts, and the songs from it are among her most performed.
A strong Linda Ronstadt tribute band does not stop at rock and country. Ronstadt had a genuine gift for Motown material, and those songs tend to generate immediate audience response. “Heat Wave,” originally recorded by Martha and the Vandellas, was a top five hit for Ronstadt in 1975. “Ooh Baby Baby,” drawn from the Smokey Robinson catalog, reached number seven on the pop charts. “Tracks of My Tears,” also from the Smokey Robinson songbook, showcased a softer, more delicate side of her voice.
These Motown covers add range to a tribute set. They show the depth of what Ronstadt could do with a song, and they connect with listeners who may not have known these were covers at all.
“Long Long Time,” from Ronstadt’s 1970 album Silk Purse, found an entirely new generation of listeners after it was featured in the HBO series The Last of Us. A Linda Ronstadt tribute band performing this song today will often find younger audience members who know every word. “Poor Poor Pitiful Me,” from her 1977 album Simple Dreams, is another fan favorite β originally a Warren Zevon song β that works well in a live setting because of its energy and storytelling.
“Different Drum,” her early hit with The Stone Poneys, is also frequently requested. It was one of the first songs that introduced her voice to a wider audience and holds up extremely well in live performance. A well-rounded Linda Ronstadt tribute band will typically include at least one or two songs from this earlier period to give the set more depth.
